Obstetric Emergencies
Obstetric Emergencies

Complete this course to earn 1 CPD hour

Describes maternal physiology, maternal resuscitation and response to trauma during pregnancy, with examples of major obstetric emergencies

Obstetric emergences are fortunately rare. They can, however, occur at home or in the hospital, with some women presenting through the emergency department before being transferred to the maternity unit.

As an emergency nurse, you require a good knowledge of the normal reproductive system and functions in order to care for women with an obstetric emergency.

This module initially reviews relevant anatomy and physiology in relation to the changes that occur during pregnancy, showing you how these affect emergency situations.

It then looks at the most acute of all obstetric emergencies — a maternal collapse or cardiac arrest requiring CPR – discussing modifications required for pregnant or newly postpartum patients, and the requirements for a perimortem caesarean section.

Finally, the module briefly describes the major obstetric emergencies you may encounter in the ED or intensive care unit, including ectopic pregnancy, eclampsia and sepsis.

Completing this online module accumulates one hour of CPD for nurses.
