Prompts nurses to question the definition of mental health while addressing recovery, personality theory and various explanations for human behaviour.

Mental health and mental illness are complex, distinct concepts that are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Indeed, many individuals will experience both, being mentally healthy even after a diagnosis of mental illness.

So what, then, is your understanding of mental health and mental illness? Do you subscribe to a theory of personality? And if so, how do you put such theory into practice?

This module shines important light upon these very questions, asking you to define and critique biomedical, psychological and sociological theories of personality and human behaviour.

Considering the work of a range of theorists from Piaget to Maslow to Freud, you will describe how the theories explain both normal and abnormal behaviour, and then examine the contribution of such theory to the development of nursing theories.

From this point, you will analyse the usefulness of the nature versus nurture debate and ultimately identify your own preferred theory of personality development.

Completing this online module accumulates one hour of CPD for nurses.
