Complete this course to earn 1 CPD hour

Introduces essential skills and knowledge to help nurses perform thorough and accurate biopsychosocial assessments and develop plans of care.

Assessment and diagnosis are critical in ongoing care delivery for people with a mental disorder. A comprehensive assessment is crucial in determining the client diagnosis and developing an appropriate treatment plan.

You may already know that nurses need advanced interpersonal skills to help clients feel comfortable in their care, but what about other criteria required for effective assessment and diagnosis?

This module presents all-important skills and knowledge to assist you in performing a comprehensive and accurate biopsychosocial assessment. You will also gain invaluable insight to help you develop a plan of care in collaboration with your client.

As well as identifying the interviewing skills required for the assessment process, you will address the observations, tests and procedures necessary to complete a comprehensive physical assessment.

You will discuss the rationale for assessment, diagnosis and classification of mental disorders and come to understand assessment as it relates to Australia’s National Standards for Mental Health.

As you work your way through this detailed unit, you will develop an understanding of different assessment methods, spiritual and cultural assessment, the mental state examination and precautions you can take to minimise risk.

Completing this online module accumulates one hour of CPD for nurses.
