Complete this course to earn 1 CPD hour

Looks at the qualities and skills that make a clinical nursing leader, encouraging nurses to develop and reflect upon their own leadership style.

Observing your peers, you are probably already noticing the emergent characteristics of future nursing leaders. But are you aware you are doing this? And what exactly makes a clinical leader?

It is never too early to focus on developing your leadership style or begin critiquing others’ leadership styles, and this module helps you concentrate on that. It begins by describing contemporary trends influencing clinical practice, models of nursing care delivery and aspects of leadership in the clinical setting, and explains the differences between the terms ‘leadership’ and ‘management’.

Studying this module, you will discuss the desirable attributes of leaders in the clinical workplace and the role of expert clinical practice in forging a professional identity for nursing.

You will recognise strategies and opportunities for beginner nurses – maybe even yourself – to develop towards becoming nurse leaders. You will also gain insights into the way expert practitioners, functioning as leaders in the clinical setting, face challenges and successfully implement strategies to improve patient care and advance nursing practice.

Completing this online module accumulates one hour of CPD for nurses.
