NSW Premier Barry O'Farrell has ordered police checks for all nursing home staff and buildings across the state following a devastating fire at Quakers Hill nursing home in north-western Sydney.  Roger Dean, a registered nurse who worked at the nursing home, is accused of starting the fire, which has so far claimed the lives of seven residents.

According to NSW Health, 29 former residents of the nursing home are currently in hospital, and 11 of them are still in intensive care. All other former residents have been relocated to permanent accommodation in other nursing homes.

"I've asked for a full report not only on checks on staff, but also the physical structure of nursing homes and retirement villages across the state… We will ensure that lessons are learned over this tragedy," says Mr. O'Farrell. However, he continues, "This is, no matter how tragic, an isolated episode and let's not damn every nursing home with these sort of episodes."

Domain Principal Group, which operates and owns the nursing home, says that all staff had been checked and the home's accreditation was in order.

"The profession of nursing is deeply shocked that one of our own has been charged with murder in relation to this tragedy," says NSW Nurses Association general secretary Brett Holmes. Many of the nursing home workers were "traumatised and displaced as a result of this tragedy... We will continue to work with our members and Domain Principal to assist where we can with the long-term consequences of this tragic event."
