Professor Desley Hegney’s major research interest has been in the area of primary health care nursing – particularly the nursing workforce issues in rural and remote areas. She was the inaugural president of the Association for Australian Rural Nurses and Midwives and currently is a member of the Executive Committee of this association. She was the inaugural Editor of the Australian Journal of Rural Health (1992-2002).

Professor Hegney took up the position of Director of Research at the National University of Singapore's Alice Lee Centre for Nursing Studies in April 2009.

First Impressions...

It is now 12 months since I took up my appointment in Singapore.  It has been a very positive experience as Singapore is very safe, clean, close to many other Asian countries and quite friendly. English is the official language, so all the signs, notices, announcements are in English (sometimes also in Mandarin, Malay).  It takes a while to realise you are the ‘foreigner’ and to remember that, even to buy a fridge (or anything much other than clothes and food), you require your FIN (I think it must stand for foreign identifier number).
